Website vs Instagram Page: Which Actually Gets You Customers

They are not actually doing the same job
Instagram is built for discovery and browsing — someone scrolls past your post, likes the photo, maybe follows. A website is built for decision-making — someone lands on it after they already have some interest, and they are trying to answer specific questions before they call or visit. Comparing the two as if they compete for the same job misses the point; the real question is whether a business needs one, the other, or both.
Most small businesses in Gaya already run an Instagram page, and that is a good instinct — it costs nothing to start and it is where a lot of local discovery already happens. The gap shows up right after that first discovery moment, when a genuinely interested customer wants to check pricing, location, or past work in one organised place, and a scrolling feed makes that harder than it should be.
What Instagram genuinely does well
Instagram is close to unbeatable for showing personality, recent work, and social proof through comments and shares. A new dish at a restaurant, a finished haircut, a renovated hotel room — these moments are made for a feed, and the algorithm can put them in front of people who have never heard of the business before. That kind of reach is genuinely valuable, and a website cannot replicate it on its own.
Where it falls short as a business's only presence
An Instagram page cannot easily show a full price list, a clean multi-page menu, or a proper contact form, and older posts get buried within days as new ones are added. A customer comparing three hotels before choosing one is unlikely to scroll through 200 posts on each Instagram page to find the information; they expect a website with clear pages for rooms, pricing, and location.
There is also a trust question. A business that only exists as an Instagram handle can feel less established to a first-time customer, especially for higher-value decisions like a hotel booking, a school admission enquiry, or hiring a service provider, compared to a business that also has a proper website with its own domain name.
The setup that actually works for most Gaya businesses
The businesses getting the most value online usually run both, deliberately: Instagram for regular content, reach, and personality, and a website as the organised home base that Instagram traffic, Google search, and WhatsApp shares all point back to. Neither replaces the other; a website without any social presence misses easy reach, and a social presence without a website leaves money on the table every time someone wants to check details before committing.
