How to Check if Your Shop Is Actually Showing Up on Google

Why searching your own business name does not tell you much
Most business owners check their own visibility by typing their shop's name into Google from their own phone, seeing it appear, and assuming everything is fine. This is misleading because Google already knows your phone's location and browsing history, and it often shows your own business to you specifically, even when it would rank poorly for a stranger searching the same term nearby.
A more honest test is searching not for your business name, but for what a new customer would actually type: the type of business plus the area, like a restaurant near a specific market, or a hotel near a specific landmark. That search, ideally done from a different phone or an incognito browser tab, shows a closer approximation of what a real prospective customer sees.
What to actually check for
Start with the map results at the top of the search — is your business one of the three shown by default, or does someone have to click through to more results to find you? Then check whether your Google Business Profile actually appears with correct hours, phone number, and photos, or whether it looks abandoned with old information. Finally, check how many reviews you have compared to the businesses appearing above you; review count and recency are among the strongest signals Google uses for local ranking.
The quiet gap between existing online and showing up
A business can have a Facebook page, an Instagram account, and even an old website, and still be functionally invisible for the searches that matter, because none of those are optimised for how Google ranks local businesses specifically. Showing up requires a properly filled Google Business Profile, consistent business information across every listing, and enough recent reviews and activity to signal that the business is active and trustworthy right now, not three years ago.
What to do with what you find
If your business is missing from the map results entirely, claiming or fixing your Google Business Profile is usually the fastest first step, often before spending anything on a website redesign. If you are appearing but below competitors, the gap is usually reviews, photo freshness, or consistent posting, all of which are fixable without a large budget, just consistent attention over a few weeks.
