How Hotels in Gaya Can Reduce Dependence on Booking Platform Commissions
By Shaaz · 3 August 2026 · 5 min read
What the commission actually costs over a year
Booking platforms typically take a commission on every reservation made through them, commonly a meaningful double-digit percentage of the room rate. For a hotel or guesthouse near Bodh Gaya during peak pilgrimage or tourist season, this adds up to a significant amount handed over on bookings that, in many cases, the guest would have made directly if a simple option existed.
This is not an argument against listing platforms; they genuinely bring visibility a small hotel could not otherwise afford, especially for guests searching from outside Bihar for the first time. The problem is when every single booking, including from guests who already know and trust the hotel, still goes through a platform and its commission by default, simply because there is no direct alternative on offer.
Who actually books directly, and why
Direct bookings tend to come from three kinds of guests: people who stayed before and are returning, people referred by someone who already stayed, and people who found the hotel through a Google search of its name specifically, often after seeing it mentioned somewhere else first. All three groups already have some trust in the hotel; they are not comparison-shopping across ten unfamiliar options the way a first-time OTA browser is. A direct booking channel is aimed at exactly this group, not at replacing the platform's role in reaching first-time, unfamiliar guests.
What a hotel actually needs to capture this group
The requirements are modest: a website that clearly shows rooms, pricing, and amenities, a simple WhatsApp or form-based enquiry flow so a returning or referred guest can book without hunting for a phone number, and the hotel's name and location set up properly on Google so a direct search leads somewhere useful instead of only to a listing platform's version of the hotel. None of this requires taking listings down or reducing OTA visibility.
A realistic goal, not an all-or-nothing switch
A sensible target for most small and mid-sized hotels in the area is shifting a modest share of bookings, particularly repeat and referred guests, to a direct channel over a year, while keeping OTA listings fully active for new-guest discovery. Even a modest shift meaningfully changes the margin on a portion of bookings without any risk to overall occupancy, since the platforms remain in place for everyone else.
